China's
Far West
The Silk Road

August 30 - September 17, 2009

Travel along the world’s oldest international highway in the footsteps of some of history’s greatest world travelers - Marco Polo from Europe, Xuan Zang from Asia and Ibn Battuta from the Middle East. View and learn not only about the silk and other goods but also about the belief systems and religious art of India, Central Asia, and the Middle East that were carried along the Silk Road to China. Also learn about the archaeological raids by "foreign devils" from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States in the early 1900’s that led to whole libraries of ancient manuscripts, frescoes, and relics of early Buddhist culture being taken from Northwest China, including the oldest known printed book in the world. View the ancient art of the Silk Road in incredible caves and grottoes uncovered from the sand by these same archaeologists. Visit with Khazak, Uygur, and Tu families and learn about the legendary customs and life styles of these minority ethnic groups that have populated the Silk Road from its inception. Also visit day and evening bazaars, which still swirl with the smells, speech, and looks of another age.

People to People Experiences: Meet the Chinese people as you enjoy the opportunity to speak with university students in Xi’an and with Tibetan, Mongolian, Wei, and Tu students in Xining, as well as kindergarten students in Kashgar. Have the opportunity to visit with a Tu family and a Khazak family, and share lunch with a Uygar family. Explore the fabulous sounds, smells and excitement of the bustling markets in Kashgar and Urumqi.

Sample Lectures: “Education in China,” “China’s 55 National Minorities,” “The Grape Valleys of Turpan,” “Karezes: The Underground Irrigation System,” “Buddhism in China.”

"Everything about the Silk Road was a remarkable experience, from sunrise over the Gobi to the vineyards of Turpan and the mountain pastures of
Xinjiang. Other faves: The dumpling dinner. The camel ride. The overnight train with the Chinese running around in their pajamas. Not seeing any
Westerners for days on end, although we certainly saw Asian tourists. The night market in Urumqi. The food was terrific everywhere! One of the best
aspects of the trip for me was observing examples of how China is changing at the speed of light. In all, it was a wonderful experience that should carry me through to next summer. Thanks, TraveLearn!"
